Severe weather and storm preparation

Prepare your home

• Trim trees and branches around your home, clear the gutters, down pipes and drains
• If possible, get your roof checked for damage or corrosion by a professional
• If you have shades, sails and awnings, make sure they are properly fitted, tied down, or closed away
• Clear any debris or loose items away from the yard
• Have emergency service numbers in a close location or saved on your phone
• Create an emergency kit (see the SES kit list
• Check the Bureau of Meteorology for updates on the storm front www.bom.gov.au
• If there is a severe warning fill your sinks and bathtub with drinking water
• If floods are likely move cardboard and any chemicals to high locations, and turn off, or unplug electrical devices if water is rising

• Always follow flood warning signs
• Never drive through flood water
• Shelter vehicles safely, and not under trees
• Avoid driving when the storm is coming

• Make sure it is completely over and safe before venturing outside
• If you need assistance call emergency services
• Check your house for damage on the walls, roof, windows, and doors
• Check for water leaks before turning on electricity. Do not use any water damaged goods
• Throw away any perishable goods that may have gone bad
• Check all smoke alarms are still working

• Check with your local council for information on flood areas, plans or records
• Have emergency service numbers in a close location or saved on your phone
• Create an emergency kit (see the SES kit list)

• Keep your family and pets in a safe place
• Turn off electricity and gas
• Move household items to higher ground where they cannot float away
• If applicable put sandbags or equivalent over bathroom drains and toilets to prevent sewage flowing back
• If you have time seal windows and doors
• Open gates or fences to allow water to flow freely
• Check and seal all ventilation holes, cellar doorways and points where water can get in
• Roll out builder's plastic around the base of your home - leaving 40cm on the ground to put the sandbags on. Tape remaining plastic to the outside walls to a height of 1.5m. Keep external downpipes on the outside of the plastic
• Secure hazardous items
• Place important personal documents, valuables and vital medical supplies into a waterproof case in an accessible location
• Monitor your local radio for warnings and advice
• Do not eat food that has been in floodwaters
• Do not enter flood waters that exceed your knees

• Always follow flood warning signs
